A pulmonologist, also called a chest physician, treats conditions of the lungs and airways. That covers everything from seasonal wheezing to long-term breathlessness, persistent cough, tuberculosis and scarring of the lung tissue.
People usually arrive after months of putting it off — a cough that outstayed a chest infection, breathlessness on stairs that was not there last year, wheezing that returns every winter. Most of these conditions respond much better when seen early.
You do not need a referral to book, and online consultation is available if travelling to a clinic is difficult.
Ongoing inflammation of the airways, which narrow and tighten in response to triggers. Symptoms come and go rather than staying constant: wheezing on breathing out, a dry cough worse at night, chest tightness, breathlessness on exercise or in cold air.
Asthma is often worse in Indore between October and February, when dust, construction, crop-residue smoke and Diwali smoke combine in air that sits closer to the ground.
Treatment uses two kinds of inhaler. A controller is taken daily whether or not you feel unwell and reduces the underlying inflammation. A reliever opens the airways within minutes during an attack. Using only the reliever is the commonest mistake — it treats the symptom and leaves the inflammation untouched. Reaching for one more than twice a week is worth a consultation.
A lasting narrowing of the airways that, unlike asthma, does not fully reverse. Smoking is the best-known cause; in India, long-term exposure to cooking smoke from wood or dung fires is another major one, affecting women who have never smoked.
Signs worth acting on: breathlessness on activity you managed a year ago, a cough producing sputum most mornings, repeated winter chest infections. COPD cannot be reversed but its progression can be slowed substantially.
TB is curable. Almost everyone who completes the full course of treatment recovers completely — worth saying first, because stigma keeps people from seeking help, and delay is what makes TB dangerous.
Test if you have a cough lasting more than two weeks, evening fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or are coughing blood. Diagnosis uses a chest X-ray and sputum test; CBNAAT returns results in hours and also detects drug resistance.
Treatment runs a minimum of six months and must be completed even after you feel better. Stopping early is how drug-resistant TB develops. Medication is free under India national programme. Consultations here are confidential.
A group of conditions in which lung tissue becomes scarred and stiff, making it harder for oxygen to reach the blood. Presents as gradually worsening breathlessness with a persistent dry cough, and is often mistaken for asthma at first. Needs an HRCT chest scan — a standard X-ray is not detailed enough.
Sneezing, blocked or running nose, itchy eyes and throat irritation arriving seasonally or in particular places. Left untreated these frequently trigger asthma symptoms too, so both are worth assessing together.
Fever with cough, chest pain on breathing, and breathlessness. Most cases treat well with antibiotics, but an infection that is not clearing after a course, or that keeps returning to the same part of the lung, needs a specialist look.
